I walked around Elterwater Common and was sickened by the piles of litter and rubbish. Some of it was half hidden in the bracken, some dropped in the drainage channels; there were also, alas, signs of dumping from the villagers ¬food cans, milk bottles, cartons, newspapers, bed frames, wet mattresses. There was scorched ground and the re¬mains of camp fires. Half burnt fence posts showed one source of fuel. I was appalled and vowed that a cleanup would be one of my first jobs.

Heading south from Ciutadella along the main coastal road, you're soon amongst the interminable villa complexes that extend almost without interruption as far as Cap d' Artrutx, at the southwest tip of the island. This is all rather depressing, but, amidst the aesthetic gloom, the resort of CALA BLANCA does at least pos¬sess a modicum of charm, its low limestone sea cliffs framing a narrow cove and a small sandy beach. The swimming is safe and the beach has all the usual resort facilities, includ¬ing a bar and water-ski, lounger and pedalo rental. Why and how was Rothenburg preserved? The answer is two miraclesand commercial decline. The first miracle occurred in October 1631 during the Thirty Years' War when, after bitter, stubborn resistance, the town was conquered by the troops of Count Johannes von Tilly, the imperial field marshal. Tilly was so angry about the staunch defense that Rothenburg's militia had put up that he announced he would immediately execute the four councillors who had ordered the resistance and then destroy the town. The niece of one of the councillors, accompanied by two other small children, implored Tilly to spare the men's lives. The general refused. Then the daughter of the town's cellar master arrived, offering refreshments while everyone waited for the executioner, and praised Rothenburg's fine Tauber valley wine. .... Read more
